The Impact of Flowers - Styling Hints from the Professionals.

Flowers by ChiltonYour dream day...your wedding...your vision being created by the wedding experts. Flowers are one of the most important visual elements of your wedding day... Courtesy of Christine Simpkin, Director of Flowers by Chilton.

Flowers are one of the most important visual elements of your wedding day, unrestrained by tradition, today's bride can carry a bouquet of the flowers she adores. Flowers contribute to the overall appearance of your wedding day and create a colourful, and often fragrant, impact. Attention to detail and consistency throughout the entire wedding will give the sense of quiet elegance. Before you do anything, decide on a colour scheme. The styling should flow effortlessly throughout the wedding entirely; from the gorgeous gowns and bouquets to the stationery, cake and reception/venue d├ęcor.

It is important that you use a professional florist to create your wedding flowers, particularly if you want stunning flowers that will last. It is the job of your floral designer to construct bouquets that will last through your entire wedding day without wilting, falling apart or prematurely drooping. Ultimately you are paying for the workmanship and skill of your floral designer as well as the flowers themselves. It is pointless having divine flowers that have been unprofessionally fashioned into a bouquet that doesn't last the day.

It is important to shop around and choose the right floral designer for you. Shopping around doesn't necessarily mean looking for the best price! Choose someone who understands your look and who is a professional. Not all florists are floral designers and not all floral designers are wedding specialists, so choose carefully. A wedding specialist has the specific knowledge and skill to create the stunning wedding flowers for your dream day. You wouldn't wear pointy stilettos with your tracky dackies now would you? When it comes to fashion certain things just don't go together! It's a simple question of harmony. Consider the design and shape of your bridal gown when choosing your bouquet and be sure to ask your designer on how to carry your bouquet.

Styling hints

Garden wedding, for an outdoor wedding choose colours that work with your surroundings.

Beach wedding, this style of wedding calls for more open flowers and loose arrangements, something less formal and more relaxed in style.

Modern cocktail wedding, the fun part of having a modern style wedding is that you get endless options when it comes to flowers. Allow your venue and dress style to guide you as to the best style of bouquet.

Black tie wedding, for this formal style of wedding choose more structured bouquets sticking with one or two colours only. This will give a heightened sense of elegance.

It can be helpful to create a scrapbook of ideas that you like and dislike to go through with your designer. This will help your designer to understand and get a feel for how you want your day to be. Don't scrimp on your flowers. Flowers are a focal point of your wedding day and regardless of whether you are working with a small or large budget, flowers should be a high wedding priority as they can provide so much impact for relatively little expense, making the most of seasonal flowers is important. A bride needs mother nature on her side!

The price of your flowers will vary according to the workmanship involved, the quality of the flowers and the volume required so give your floral designer an approximate budget. A good floral designer will work wonders within your budget.

Notes of appreciation from our "happy couples" of Hawkes Bay

"I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the beautiful flowers on Saturday. You have been an absolute pleasure to work with and went the extra mile to make sure everything was stress free. We also really appreciated that you added in extra bouquets for myself and the girls due to the rain. It was a lovely touch." Sarah & Steve

"Thank you so much for the most amazing wedding flowers, they were everything I thought they would be & more, you did an amazing job, thank you so very much." Steph & Blaine

"Just Wow. Everything was far beyond our expectations, from the beginning you were fantastic, you spent the time talking and caring about what we wanted and how we wanted everything, even the cake flowers! We still can't get over that you drove them all the way to Taupo! That blew our minds! It was such a huge help, Thank You." Shane & Amanda
